Hi lovelies! Yesterday's DIY was a shirt for my daughter (remember this DIY mix tape tshirt?), so today I have to do one for the dude! He has a couple of plain tshirts that could use some jazzing up, so I decided to do that by adding a camouflage pocket! So fun, right? And this again isn't just for kids... I absolutely foresee myself doing this to some of mine as well! {Click for the how-to!}
You'll need:
- Tshirt
- Fabric for your pocket (I found this remnant of amazing twill camo fabric for only $2 at Hobby Lobby!)
- Tailor's chalk
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
- Pocket template (more on that, below!)
I drew this template on some scrap cardboard and wrote out my measurements on it for you :) I think it's pretty self-explanatory, but if you have trouble understanding it please let me know and I'll answer your question right away!
Use your tailor's chalk to trace the stencil onto the wrong side of the fabric.
Cut out your fabric, and then cut out the stencil on the inner lines. The outer lines represent your seam allowance.
Trace the final shape of the pocket onto your fabric, again on the wrong side.
Fold the fabric over on the chalk lines, using the edge of your scissors to crease the folds, as shown above.
Here's what you'll have. Now if you prefer to sew on your machine, go ahead and do that now. If you'd prefer to use fabric glue, follow along.
Sorry, my glue exploded! But what you want to do here is open the fold and apply a thin line of glue, fold it back over and gently press down. Repeat all around.
Let dry for a little bit, it doesn't need to dry overnight at this point.
Now apply glue to all edges, on the folded over part, except for along the top (unless you don't want your pocket to be functional!)
Place it where you'd like, and press down firmly along the glue lines. Let dry overnight.
Voila! A brand new shirt! I love it, I think it came out so well. The dude is absolutely smitten with it too. I'm thinking of replacing the sleeves with camo print next, what do you think?
The options here are endless, use any fabric you'd like for a multitude of looks!
xo
